Lighting exercise

Sound exercise

Different types of sounds

What's Diegetic sound

Diegetic sounds is a visible sound that is in all films an example of diegetic sound is the sound of the characters, sounds made by different objects in the film and music and instruments in the film. Diegetic sound can also be  either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.

What's Non-Diegetic sound

Non diegetic sound is a sound that is not in the film and the characters cant hear but the audience can. We mostly find Non diegetic sound in horror films where y hear intense music that comes on the scary bit of the film.

Parallel sound

Parallel sounds are used to mostly match up to a scene for example in a horror film a scream will match the scene.

Contrapuntal sound

Contrapuntal sound is the opposite of parallel sound it something that does not match a scene for example if they were playing rock music on a scary part of the film.

Mis-en-scene

Mis-en-scene

What is Mis-en-scene

Mis-en-scene has more than one element in it, this consists of costume and make up, facial expressions and body language, setting and props, lighting and color and positions of characters and objects within the frame.

Setting and props- This is important because it tells you what the films  is going to be like for example in action films it could be set in the streets of Rio where it looks rough and life's hard, its also located in a hot location. On the other hand the props show that its an action film because you could see a guy holding a gun and helping a friend out.

costume and makeup- In costume and make up its important because it tells us if the character we are seeing is wealthy average or poor. In action films we see the characters in casual clothes which shows there ready to work. There hair is also clean and they have some facial hair most of the time. For make up they use it to make them look like they have been in a real fight.

Facial expressions and body language- This shows the characters actions and emotions for example in action films most of the characters will look like they just came out a battle. It makes them look like there in lots of pain.

Positioning-this is a great technique that gets attention from the audience for example in action films we see characters slouched, sometimes limping away from anymore danger.

Lighting- depending on the films the lighting can change from light to dark like in some horror films. In action films the lighting is always rather light because its usually set outside in a hot country. Its usually even more lighter after they have finished here battle and on there way home.

preliminary

Preliminary task Evaluation

In our preliminary task it starts of with  a guy who knows a lot of information, he then gets set-up thinking that he has to take this chip of information which is worth millions, when he gets brutally murdered.

We have used all the techniques in our film which are:

Match on action

Eye line match

Shot, reverse shot

180 degree rule

We used the match on action when they see "Klaus" walk through the door.

We then used the eye line match when we were recording "klaus"

We used the shot reverse shot when "Klaus" and "Wesley" were having a conversation

We did not break the 180 degree rule by staying on the same side.

i think that we did all the shots accurately, the only mistake we did was we took long to do the shot reverse shot because we were getting distracted and we didn't speak loud enough to get heard. I think next time we will improve on how sound when recording and the amount of time we take to make our film.

I think that the positive things we did in our film was that we all did the acting pretty good and all the shots worked well. I also think that the editing was well and made the film work

I think we needed to make improvements on our volume of the film because you cant hear that well from it. I also think that we needed to improve on the time it took us to make this film.

Mcguffin

Mcguffin

Mcguffin is in a story hat is used to drive a plot. Mcguffins have no purpose in the films, it mainly is used to distract you from trying to figure out the ending of the film. Mcguffins usually don't come up again later and wont explain the ending. It mostly a mysterious package that everyone is looking for

The rules and conventions of thrillers

The rules and conventions of thrillers

In the thriller genre there’s lots of different sub genres, which do certain rules to create a specific effect on the audience.  Thrillers are mostly fast paced with regular action this includes a hero who has to stop this strong intelligent villain.

One of the characteristic’s in a thriller is the location is often in exotic places such as foreign cities for example in James bond films he is in mostly foreign places. On the other hand some of the thrillers are presented as people in an ordinary situation and then extraordinary things happen to them for example in the film “The Birds” we see birds attack these ordinary people which is extraordinary for birds to do. Finally some other thrillers have a hero as an ordinary person then extraordinary things happen to them for example the in “the hulk” there’s an ordinary man but when he gets angry he turns in to this giant big green guy also known as the hulk.

In some of the thrillers the story’s is mostly centred around a crime or often a murder or someone captured their family which sets the theme on revenge and the person who murdered or captured their family also known as the antagonist is powerful and mostly has an army of people where as the protagonist is mostly one person who is after revenge and is fighting an army of people by himself.
Secondly some thriller genres are more complicated and is not the same as some of original thriller convention for example in the film “law abiding citizen” we see a man’s wife and kid murders we think that the man is the protagonist (hero) but later on in the film we see that he actually is the antagonist (villain) and then a new protagonist comes, therefore few of the thrillers don’t stick to their thriller conventions.

Finally in the thriller genre there is also an enigma set in the opening of the film and then the film gets complicated and then at the end it becomes clear. This is done to engage the audience because they don’t know the aspect of the film which makes them eager to find out what’s going on in the film till the information’s revealed. An example of an enigma is done in the film fight club where brad Pitt has a gun pointed at another character, this is later resolved in the end.

In the Thriller genre there are lots of different sub genres such as action thriller, crime thriller, horror thriller and etc.

Genres and Narratives

What are genres?
Genres are different categories of films for example we have
action
Horror
Comedy
thriller
In these genres there make them to be specific so you can pick what film you specifically want to watch for example if i wanted to see a film with lots of action i would look for the films under action and if i wanted to look or something thats scary i would look for a film under the horror genre.

There also is sub genres for example
Action thrillers
Animated action films
Sub genres are there to have a bit of both for example if i wanted a film with action thriller i would have some of the action and some of the thriller.

What are Narratives?
Narrative is the what tells you the story is about for example like in life of pie its about a boy who gets stranded on the sea and then escapes.

The lawyer “Mitch Brenner” finds her in a pet shop and decides to play a practical joke on her so she decides to return the favour. “Melanie Daniels” then drives down an hour north of Francisco to bodega bay where Mitch stays over to see his mother “Lydia” and his sister “Cathy”. When she arrives in bodega bay we start to see the birds start acting strange. “Melanie Daniels” then pranks “Mitch Brenner” and starts crossing the bay, a seagull out of no where attacks her. Lydia then finds her neighbour dead with his eyes pecked out which shows us his one of the victims. Not long after hundreds of birds started to brutally attack anyone that is outside. There is no imp articular reason why the birds are doing this, survival becomes the most important priority.

Thriller

Thriller

A thriller is a film which is made to keep the viewer on edge of there seat with suspenseful action.   Many people find thrillers very enjoyable, and they appreciate the fast pacing and complex plots associated with this genre.
Thrillers typically have lots of plots, twists and lots of red herrings, for example, keeping people unsure about what is going to happen. Thrillers also have a lot of action in them. The plots of thrillers can vary widely. Some are supernatural, for example, centring around mystical antagonists.

Some thrillers are  more for educated people to enjoy them. Many such thrillers incorporate a psychological aspect, forcing people to examine the motivations and back stories of the characters to figure out the plot.

Media studies written assignment

As media studies - written assignment       By Klaus Rudschuck
Meeting George

The storyboard behind meeting George is theirs two friends who are meeting each other and going over to meet George to go to class. There wasn't really much of a storyboard because we were trying to practice some shots. These shots include:

  • Long shot
  • Medium shot
  • Close up
  • Extreme close up
  • Point of view
  • Over the shoulder
  • High angle
  • Pan
  • Tilt
  • Tracking shot

Firstly we decide to use a long shot of Klaus walking to show me coming into school. Secondly we used a medium shot of Wesley walking up to Klaus to show that they were meeting up. Thirdly we used an extreme close up of Klaus and Wesley shaking hands. Fourthly we used a close up of Klaus and Wesley talking and an over the shoulder shot of them talking. Fifthly we did a point of view shot of George meeting Klaus and Wesley and then walking through the door. Sixthly we took a high angle shot of Klaus, Wesley and George walking to the science block. Seventhly we took a tilt shot of Klaus, Wesley and George talking about were there class is. Finally we took a tracking shot of Klaus, Wesley and George going through a door and going to there class room. All of these shots worked perfectly because it showed all the characters actions properly and it made all the shot cooperate to make it look more professional.

I think that we held steady all our shots and we framed each shots appropriately

Overall the positive elements in our film were that everyone participated well and made the film successful
I think we will need to make improvements on the camera quality and put more shots like the crane shot, low angle shot and a pan shot.
